Every car has a service history. Most houses have a drawer.

Nostradomo is software for home inventory, property records, and the things a household owns: what’s in the house, what’s been done to it, and how you know.

What the record holds

A record is a list of plain entries. Each one says what a thing is, when it happened, and how you know.

Things, room by room

Appliances, furniture, tools: whatever you’d have to list from memory after a bad day. Model and serial numbers where they matter.

The building itself

The roof, the furnace, the water heater, and the work done on them. Who did it and when, as far as anyone knows.

How you know

Every entry carries its source. On file means a receipt, an invoice, or a photo is attached. Your note means you entered it and nothing backs it up yet.

Unknown is an answer

If nobody knows when the furnace went in, the record says so. A blank stays blank until someone actually knows.

Why a household keeps one

Nobody needs this on an ordinary Tuesday. You need it when someone asks a question and the answer is in a drawer, an old inbox, or the head of whoever dealt with it at the time.

Under each question is the entry from the Alder Lane record that answers it.

The record is for your own use. It isn’t an appraisal, an inspection, a deed, or an insurance policy, and it doesn’t replace any of them.

How it’s kept, and how you come back to it

It isn’t a weekend project. The record starts small and gets better each time something happens to the house.

  1. The first evening

Start with the house, then walk through it. Add the things that keep it running and the things you’d miss most. Leave the rest for later.

  2. As things happen

A new dishwasher, a roof repair, a furnace service. Add the entry when it happens, and attach the receipt if there is one.

  3. The day someone asks

Open the app, go to the room or the system, and read what’s there: what it is, when it happened, and how you know.
